SPOKANE, Wash. — The Spokane Police Department (SPD) has offered new information on the night of Feb. 23 downtown shooting which resulted in the arrest of 18-year-old Richard Smith.

Smith is accused of shooting someone after getting into a verbal altercation with him near the 7/11 gas station downtown. That person was later hospitalized and was shot in the leg and stomach.

SPD located Smith at an apartment complex that same night in the Spokane Valley. He refused to be taken into custody. Court documents released today reveal that there was potentially a woman also in the residence at the time. SWAT and hostage negotiators were both involved at the scene, where Smith was arrested after what SPD describes as a brief standoff.

Smith is now in Spokane County Jail facing a 1st degree assault charge.
