Spokane man arrested for driving unsafe van without plates

SPOKANE — A 51-year-old man who claimed he had a “right to travel” was arrested Friday evening after driving an unsafe vehicle despite deputies’ warnings.

David B. Anderson was booked into Spokane County Jail on multiple misdemeanor charges after deputies found him driving a van with no license plates and a shattered windshield held up by a board and hammer.

On May 15, at approximately 7:10 p.m., deputies spotted the suspicious van in a parking lot near the intersection of East Sprague Avenue and South Chronicle Road.

According to police, the vehicle had no plates, a completely separated windshield supported by a board and hammer, an obstructed VIN, exposed wires from the steering column, and several knives inside.

When Anderson returned to the van, he told deputies the plates were at a dealership and the windshield was custom, adding he could wear goggles while driving. He provided false information when asked for identification and became argumentative.

Deputies warned him not to drive the unsafe vehicle, but minutes later observed the van turn onto E. Sprague Avenue and conducted a traffic stop.

Anderson refused to identify himself and claimed he had a “right to travel.” When additional deputies arrived and told him he would be arrested for failing to identify himself as required by law, he continued to refuse.

Deputies removed Anderson from the van and arrested him. A records check revealed two active warrants for driving while suspended and that his license remains suspended. He was also required to have an ignition interlock device but did not have one.

Anderson was booked on new charges of resisting/obstructing (two counts), making false statements, failure to identify, driving without a required interlock device, and driving while suspended. He remains in custody with bond set at $25,250.
