Spokane Public Schools discussing when to renew levy

SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane Public Schools will discuss when to put a levy renewal onto the ballot at a special meeting tomorrow night.

The board is weighing their options between putting the initiative on the upcoming November ballot or to keep in line with what they have done in the past and put it up to vote next February.

“Our school board really believes deeply that the more citizens that participate in the decision the better it is for our community.” said Dr. Adam Swinyard, Superintendent for Spokane Public Schools.

Levies currently make up about 15% of the district’s funding, paying for crucial programs and positions across the district.

“When our community thinks about public education, they include in that that there’s going to be a nurse at the student’s school, there’s going to be a reasonable class size, there’s going to be extracurriculars, there are going to be sports.” said Swinyard “Those are things that the community has come to expect from our public school system and those are contingent on the provision of a levy.”

The school district says whenever it does go before voters, they won’t ask for an increase in funding, instead the levy rate would remain the same.
