SPOKANE, Wash. – However you are traveling this year, it’s important to travel safely, this includes traveling via air.

Winter weather has hit Spokane and the Inland Northwest. Road conditions may hinder travel for some drivers but current conditions are affecting flight statuses as well.

The Spokane International Airport is expecting some delays and cancellations as harsh winter conditions hit Spokane as well as many other cities in America.

As of 5:30 a.m. there have been 4 canceled departures. These include:

Alaska Airlines 941 to SeattleAlaska Airlines 3342 to PortlandAmerican Airlines 7622 to PortlandDelta Air Lines 3824 to Seattle

Depending on weather conditions in Seattle and Portland, many flights in those areas may be canceled. This means that if your plane is expected to arrive from either of those two locations, you may have a delay or canceled flight.

It’s important to note that Spokane International Airport is working to adapt to conditions, but some delays and cancellations are not uncommon in this weather.

Now, if winter weather rolls in to delay or cancel your flight make sure you know what the next steps are.

According to the US Department of Transportation (USDOT), if your airline cancels your flight, has significant schedule changes/delays or changes your service class you are entitled to a refund.

A significant delay needs to be at least four hours, but each airline is different so make sure to clarify with your carrier.

If your flight gets canceled that is when you begin finding a different flight. Southwest will alert you when a flight is canceled but will book you on another flight, you will have to go online or talk to a service agent at the airport to find another seat. Some airlines do, but make sure you talk with an agent at the desk to make sure you have a secure seat on a departing flight!

If this does happen to you and you have not received a refund from an airline under any of these circumstances, call the US Department of Transportation so they can help you contact that specific airline.
