SPOKANE, Wash.- The NAACP celebrates 115 years of history today. The organization, which has served as one of the most prominent civil rights groups in the United States for the past century.

The Spokane NAACP posted a brief message celebrating the occasion on Feb. 12. Entitled Founders’ Day, the organization marked the day by requesting public participation, and argued that the NAACP’s work is just as critical today as it was in 1909.

“Efforts to make it harder for racial minorities to participate in the political process are proliferating across the country–and we’re fighting those efforts in court. From now until election season, we need your help to turnout as many voters as possible,” the national NAACP said.

The Spokane NAACP was a critical force for voting rights and desegregation in Spokane throughout the 1960s and 70s, and is at the forefront of anti-hate crime organizing today. It was founded in 1919, making it just a decade younger than the national organization and one of the oldest civil rights advocacy groups in the Inland Northwest.
