Spokane firefighters see setbacks during below freezing temperatures

SPOKANE, Wash. —The frigid temperatures and chill winds have taken a toll on the firefighters at Spokane Fire Department.

Everything takes longer for the fire crew as the cold weather slows down equipment and firefighters on duty.

According to SFD, hoses are more challenging to move and can freeze up. The interior mechanisms of their SCBA air tanks can also freeze if they are not being checked on regularly.

The harsh weather also affects those on duty, causing a physical toll. SFD is offering rehab to keep firefighters safe.

According to SFD, additional resources have been added, including warming tents and rehab for crews. These resources are also managing issues that come up with equipment freezing.

SFD said fire equipment operators must stay more vigilant to ensure water recirculates so it doesn’t freeze.
