Senator Patty Murray responds to Biden Administration budget request

OLYMPIA, Wash. – The annual White House budget request was released on Monday, and Senate Appropriations Committee Chair Patty Murray (D) has offered her response.

White House budgets are essentially presidential wish lists for the federal legislature, which is constitutionally the only branch of congress which appropriates funds for the government.

Murray’s role as Senate Appropriations Chair makes her one of the most influential players in determining how much of the Biden Administration’s requested appropriations are implemented in Congress. She voiced her approval of the proposed budget on Monday.

“The President’s budget shows he understands that the source of our nation’s strength is our people—and that investing in working families pays off in a major way,” Murray said.

The Washington Senator specifically touted the Biden Administration’s focus on Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security funding.

Biden’s budget also includes a proposed $500 million for protecting salmon populations in western Washington.

“Salmon and fish are so foundational to Washington state’s economy, culture, and our Tribal partners—and in writing our funding bills for next year, you can bet I will do my part at every step of the way to deliver this historic funding to restore wild salmon to our rivers and streams,” Murray said.

The Biden Administration highlighted the budget request’s projected reduction of the federal deficit and increased taxes on large corporations.

Now that the 2025 White House budget request has been sent to the legislature, the Senate Appropriations Committee will review the proposed appropriations and begin negotiating funding priorities.
