OLYMPIA, Wash. – Senator Patty Murray (D) endorsed US Senate candidate Angela Alsobrooks on March 6, placing her support behind the Maryland policymaker over her primary challenger.

Alsobrooks, who is currently the Executive of Prince George’s County, is running against US Representative David Trone (D).

Murray’s endorsement diverges from those of a handful prominent Democrats in the national legislature, including Representatives Adam Schiff and Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Several US Senate Democrats have joined Murray in backing Alsobrooks, including Senators Cory Booker and Kirsten Gillibrand.

In a Friday social media post, Murray articulated her reasoning for supporting Alsobrooks.

“[Alsobrooks] will be a strong advocate for every working family across the state of Maryland, stand up for women, and protect reproductive rights. Now more than ever, we need her voice in the Senate,” Murray said.

The endorsement illustrates Murray’s policy priorities as well as the kind of policymaker that she would like to work alongside in the Senate Democratic caucus.

Murray has highlighted reproductive issues several times in recent weeks, including inviting a woman who was denied abortion services during a health crisis while living in Idaho to the State of the Union.

A February Kaiser Family Foundation poll of over 1,000 Americans found that reproductive health could prove to be a boost for Democrats in the 2024 election cycle, with two-thirds of voters supporting abortion in the case of pregnancy emergencies.
