CHENEY, Wash. — Eastern Washington University police have arrested the suspect who allegedly threatened to fight and shoot students while on-campus gathering petition signatures last Thursday.

EWU police have released that detectives were able to set up an interview with the suspect this morning. After speaking with him they were able to connect him with this incident.

26-year-old Justin Hale was booked into Spokane County Jail for disorderly conduct, threats to bomb or injure property and trespassing.

On Oct. 19 around 1:50 p.m., a man was outside the Pence Union Building gathering signatures for petitions. EWU police say that the suspect started arguing with students and used racial slurs.

The man threated to fight students around him and threatened to come back with friends and shoot them.

After the police department sent an email to students, EWU President Shari McMahan sent an email to employees and students.

In her email she said, “This type of behavior toward our students and campus community is unacceptable… While outside visitors to our public spaces have the right to exercise their freedom of speech, the university does not tolerate verbal or physical threats – whether explicit or implied.”
