WASHINGTON, D.C. — Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) is now second-in-line for the Presidency after the ouster of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy on October 3.

Senator Murray has been serving as Senate Pro Tempore, third in the Presidential line of succession, since January.

After the ouster of McCarthy as Speaker, the line of succession is now: Vice President Kamala Harris and then Senate Pro Tempore Patty Murray.

Representative Patrick McHenry is serving as interim Speaker of the House, however, according to the rules of the Senate he does not fall into the line of succession because he is not the permanent Speaker.

Until a permanent Speaker of the House is elected Senator Murray will remain second in line for the Presidency.
