Save the Children Action Network focuses on student nutrition, childcare costs

SPOKANE, Wash. – Children are not a legally enfranchised group. They cannot vote in state or federal elections and therefore must be represented by policy advocates. Save the Children Action Network (SCAN) is one such organization.

SCAN Washington State Manager Christina Ko spoke with NonStop Local last week about the organization’s policy wins during the 2024 state legislative session and SCAN’s goals for the future.

Ko highlighted SCAN’s commitment to advocating for universal free school meals for K-12 students and reforms to decrease childcare provider turnover and make care more affordable. Childcare costs are an increasing source of stress for families across the state, including Spokane.

It was a productive legislative session for SCAN, who secured streamlined access to the Early Childhood Education and Assistance Program and influenced legislators on several policy issues.

Additional information on SCAN can be found on their website.
