SPOKANE, Wash.- Harold Balazs, the Spokane sculpture artist who gained international acclaim for his modern works, designed the Riverfront Park Japanese lantern sculpture for Expo ‘74.

The imposing edifice was installed in 1974 and seen by the over 5 million visitors who attended the fair.

Balazs’ influence is evident across Spokane, where his distinct style can be seen widely from the Riverfront fountain to St. Charles Catholic Church.

While the artist himself died in 2017, his creative vision lives on throughout the Lilac City, where his pieces can be found at several local high schools and government buildings.

Expo ‘74’s impact on the visual palette of Spokane is vast. Balazs’ lantern sculpture crafted for the event was a part of cementing that aesthetic tapestry, which continues to impress to this day.
