Research shows domestic violence increases during the holiday season

SPOKANE, Wash. — While the holiday season brings lots of joy, it is also a leading cause of domestic violence.

Domestic abuse increases in some households during this busy time, especially in places with a history of abuse.

According to Connections for Abused Women and their Children (CAWC), one of the biggest factors causing domestic violence is financial stress.

With the pressure to buy presents, host get-togethers, and invest time and money into holiday parties, the stress of having enough money can become a burden.

Financial stress can easily lead to thick tensions within a relationship, causing a possible trigger for domestic violence.

Not only is the holiday season financially stressful, but it is emotionally taxing when being social and keeping a jolly demeanor are highly focused traits during Christmas.

CAWC says that alcohol consumption is another factor that contributes to domestic violence cases during the holiday season. Alcohol is well known to impair judgment and lower inhibitions.

Grant County Sheriff’s Office (GCSO) says that tension in a family strengthens the tension in a relationship. Someone in the relationship can feel isolated, fearful, or angry.

This can cause someone to lash out and abuse people close in relationship to them.

GCSO encourages those who are experiencing or know someone who is a victim of domestic violence to find help. People can call ‘New Hope‘ at 888-560-6027, available in Grant and Adams counties or call 911.
