Post Falls police officer dies from ‘massive heart attack’ while on duty Sunday afternoon

POST FALLS, Idaho — Sunday afternoon, Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office responded to a medical emergency involving a Post Falls officer, whose death was determined to be a heart attack.

On Oct. 22 around 4:30 p.m., 36-year-old Officer Nicholas McDaniel did not respond to a status check from their communication center.

Officers were then dispatched to McDaniel’s location where he was found “slumped over the wheel of his police vehicle.”

Kootenai County Fire and Rescue preformed life-saving measures and transported McDaniel to Kootenai County Medical Center.

At the hospital, he was pronounced dead and his cause of death was determined to be by a “massive heart attack.”

36-year-old McDaniel worked for Post Falls Police Department for under a year and previously served in Hawaii for 13 years.

Post Falls Mayor Ron Jacobson commented, “We are proud of the time that Officer McDaniel gave serving our citizens and fellow colleagues at the City of Post Falls. There are no words that can make this loss easier to bear for Officer McDaniel’s family and colleagues. As a city, we mourn Officer McDaniel’s death deeply and our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and colleagues.”
