ParaSport Spokane hosts banquet to provide training, competitive opportunities for athletes

SPOKANE, Wash. — ParaSport Spokane is hosting a banquet at the end of the month to raise money to help pay for their athletes to compete at the highest stages for their sport.

Travel for these athletes is not cheap, according to Lindi Marcusen a track ParaSport athlete, “it costs seven times more for an adaptive athlete to even start compared to an able body athlete. There’s costs for the equipment that are great and to then travel, to compete against other people with disabilities in the US you have to travel.”

Back in November, some of Spokane’s top ParaSport athletes competed on the international stage at world class events in South America and Asia representing Team USA.

This trip was not cheap and ParaSport Spokane supported their athletes’ and wanted to help them achieve their athletic dreams.

Another Para-athlete and coach as well, Bob Hunt says “it’s more than just an adaptive sports team, we actually bring these kinds in to start at one or two-years-old, just moving, just getting to know their wheelchair or their disability better.”

A big that ParaSport Spokane does is bring kids who have similar disabilities together and create a community. “It changes their mindset, they change their attitudes,” said Hunt, “they’re actually determined to go through school and try to get that degree in college and so on.”

ParaSport Spokane will be hosting a banquet to help raise money for athletes traveling internationally or competing locally.

To support all athletes, there will be a ParaSport Banquet on Jan. 27. Tickets are on sale now, it is $90 for individual tickets and $900 for a table, which holds eight people. They also are seeking corporate sponsors for this event.

If you are interested in attending or wanting to sponsor this event, please go to the ParaSport Spokane website.

Also, there is still a way to support this program if you are unable to attend this banquet. They are accepting donations to “provide training and competitive athletic opportunities for youth and adults with physical disabilities that promote success, self worth and independence.”
