Multiple people killed, others hurt in western Washington industrial plant accident

LONGVIEW, Wash – Several people are dead and more are in critical condition from an incident Tuesday morning at a packaging plant in Longview, Washington.

The Longview Fire Department said a tank containing white liquor ruptured at the Nippon Dynawave Packaging plant. White liquor is a chemical mixture used in paper manufacturing.

LFD says the rupture caused multiple critical injuries, with victims transported to Longview and Vancouver hospitals for treatment.

“Officials can also confirm fatalities related to the incident,” the fire department said in a news release.

The fire department declined to release any names or number of people killed until families can be notified.

KATU-TV reports one hospital says it received nine patients from the incident. Of those nine, one person died, two were transported and six were listed in fair condition.

Investigators say there’s no threat to the surrounding community.
