Event: Roommate’s Birthday Dinner

That’s What I Call a Miniventure: I love Ethiopian food. Like really love it. It’s such a wonderful combination of aromas and flavors and textures. It was only about a year or two ago that I first experienced this amazing cuisine (at the same restaurant and everything) and I quickly lamented waiting over three decades to discover how much I enjoy it.

This week was my roommate’s birthday and when I asked where he wanted to go out to celebrate, Queen of Sheba was the place he almost immediately picked. When we arrived the dining room was nearly full with family and friends taking up nearly every table. We got to sit in a funky area in the back, decorated with bamboo walls and a woven table for two. It was fun.

We also went communal-style with the meal, ordering a shared chicken sambussa (fried pastry stuffed with filling) appetizer and a combination dinner for two that included really spicy chicken, less spicy beef, not-really-spicy-at-all beef, and vegetables. It was all incredibly delicious. We ate with our fingers, scooping up meat and sauce and veggies with injera (a flat bread kind of like naan except not at all like naan). It was messy but worth it.

If you have never tried Ethiopian food I highly encourage you to get up to the Flour Mill and Queen of Sheba sometime soon. The owner and staff are friendly, the atmosphere is warm and fun, and the food is delicious.
