SPOKANE, Wash. – Mayor Lisa Brown signed the first piece of legislation in her tenure as the leader of the city government on Friday.

The ordinance allows young people to attend festivals that serve alcohol. Entitled the Family Friendly Festivals Ordinance, the policy is intended to support the city’s economy and festival culture.

It was cosponsored by Councilmembers Zack Zappone and Paul Dillon.

Brown pitched the ordinance as a way of enhancing prominent aspects of Spokane culture during the signing ceremony.

“We are bringing the various aspects of the city together to make it easier for families to attend all the great events in our community, experiencing local food, craft beverages and great art and music,” Brown said.

Zappone and Dillon expect the bill to provide a boost to small businesses moving into festival season.
