SPOKANE, Wash. – After missing his first scheduled court appearance Monday, 25-year-old Brandon Kenny, accused of murdering two people in northeast Spokane on December 8, appeared before a judge Tuesday afternoon. He is being held on a $1,000,000 bond for two counts of first-degree murder.

In a lengthy interview with Spokane Police, the 25-year-old confessed to killing 37-year-old Colton Russell and 23-year-old Kiara Morgan-Weiland on December 8 at the intersection of Cleveland and Cuba.

The medical examiner on scene revealed Russell had been shot multiple times, until Kenny’s gun was out of bullets, and Morgan-Weiland was stabbed 51 times.

Kenny has been behind bars in the Spokane County Jail since Saturday. His appearance Tuesday afternoon was brief in district court, Judge Fassbender making sure the defendant understood his rights.

His bond is set at a million dollars, but if he is able to post bail, there are conditions. Kenny must have no new criminal law violations. He must not use, possess, or consume alcohol or non-prescribed drugs, including marijuana. Must not have any contact with any of the state’s listed witnesses. He must surrender any firearms or concealed pistol license permit. He must remain in Spokane County. And Kenny must appear timely to all future court dates.

Judge Fassbender asked if Kenny understood his charges:

“Yes, I do,” he replied.

Kenny was escorted out by guards, awaiting his next court appearance which will be Thursday December 28 for a review hearing.

In the meantime, the identity of the woman, whose death, as stated in Kenny’s confession, sparked his killings of Russell and Morgan-Weiland, has been confirmed by the Spokane County Medical Examiner.

49-year-old Jannell Martensen’s body was found in Valleyford on December 14. The cause and manner of her death is still pending.
