SPOKANE, Wash. — One of the best ways to see the mixing pot culture of America is to check out local businesses that serve our community in the Inland Northwest. This February shines a spotlight on some Black-owned businesses.

Chicken-n-More brings flavors from quality foods from the Southern states and is known for its Southern hospitality and services. According to its official website, the business is owned by Bob Hemphill, who opened Chicken-n-More’s doors in 1992. Hemphill and his wife, Teresa, have worked to maintain high standards for 28 years.

A Man and a Truck LLC is owned by Demetrius Bell, a Spokane native. People looking to avoid dirty or labor work at their house can call A Man and a Truck for assistance on home projects. The business offers various services, such as donation pick-ups, labor and hauling, dump runs, appliance removal, and more.

Bell said that the idea came from a box truck and a mission to benefit others and make an income for his family. He has a passion for the culinary industry and hopes to one day open his own BBQ restaurant.

Little Scholars Development Center offers high-quality and affordable childcare for working families. According to their website, the curriculum is adjusted to fit the student’s learning styles and social-emotional needs. Their goal is to create a solid academic and social-emotional foundation.

Nina Cherie Couture offers beautiful custom wedding gowns and alterations. Owner Nina Nichols has a background of working with well-known brands and learning from the experts in her craft. Nina said, “I had the privilege of working with amazing Tailors and Seamstresses who practically took me under their wing to teach me their techniques.”

Those looking for a beautiful wedding dress or evening gown can schedule an appointment through their website.

Kim’s Bath Shop sells self-care items, from bath bombs to lotions to serums. After opening a store on Etsy in 2017, Kim, the owner, creates recipes for new products to sell to her customers.

Located in Spokane Valley, the bath shop sells its products online, giving anyone looking to try locally-made bath products easy access. Kim makes all her products using skin-loving ingredients to produce high-quality products.
