Large police presence in Minnehaha neighborhood results in arrests unrelated to ongoing death investigation

SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Police Department (SPD) says the large law enforcement presence Thursday night in Spokane’s Minnehaha neighborhood was connected to the ongoing investigation into two deaths in that area a week ago, but the arrests officers made last night were not.

Two people were found dead on December 8 after officers responded to a shots fired call near Cuba St. and Cleveland Ave.

Those people have been identified by the Spokane County Medical Examiner as 37-year-old Colton Russell and 23-year-old Kiara Morgan-Weiland, but the cause or manner of their deaths still hasn’t been released at this time.

An SPD spokesperson says officers were serving what they called a “high risk warrant” Thursday night in a neighborhood nearby, based on multiple crimes–including the ongoing death investigation.

The result of serving that warrant–with dozens of police and SWAT units on scene–was several people detained by officers. Spokane police say some of those people were eventually arrested on warrants completely unrelated to the death investigation.

Spokane police weren’t able to provide NonStopLocal KHQ with the specific number of people arrested Thursday night or what charges they’re facing.

Very little is known about the deaths of Russell and Morgan-Weiland more than a week later, with still no arrests made and no information about how they died, though Spokane police insist they’re working nonstop on the case.
