K9 Chewbacca celebrates last tour of duty with the Grant County Sheriff’s Office

GRANT COUNTY, Wash. – After nearly six years of service, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office celebrated K9 Chewbacca on his last day of service.

Chewbacca has been a part of GCSO since 2018 when he was partnered with his handler, Sargent Nick Overland. During his career, Chewbacca fulfilled 146 deployments and made 94 arrests.

Chewbacca’s last day with GCSO was Dec. 7, and he will enjoy his retirement with Sargent Overland.

“Most of the time, Chewy just had to get out of the car or announce “I’m here” for the bad guys to decide to surrender,” GCSO said in a Facebook post.

Earlier this year, K9 Hawk and K9 Edo retired early due to health and handler reasons. Now, GCSO has one remaining K9 team, K9 Zedd and his handler, Deputy Luis Jimenez.

“The Sheriff’s Office for several months has been working on a continuity of service plan in anticipation of the retirement of K9s,” said GCSO.

GCSO’s K9 program operates almost entirely on donations. Community support is vital to keep the program up and running. If you want to donate to the K9 program for GCSO, visit the Columbia Basin Foundation web page and click on the donate button. Ensure you specify you are donating to the “Grant County Sheriff’s Office K9” account.
