Judge in University of Idaho quadruple murder case orders prosecutors to turn over some DNA records to defense

MOSCOW, Idaho – The Judge overseeing the quadruple murder trial of Bryan Kohberger has approved Kohberger’s defense to receive some of the DNA records they requested.

In a court document filed this week, Judge John Judge writes that, “the court has now completed its review of the information provided by the State and orders the State to discover to the defense a portion of the IGG information.” IGG stands for “Investigative Genetic Genealogy”, which prosecutors have said was used to initially identify Bryan Kohberger as a suspect.

A leather sheath for a knife was found at the off-campus home where the University of Idaho students were killed. Investigators located human DNA on the sheath’s button snap, which was later linked to Kohberger, police have said.

Kohberger’s defense team has been requesting these DNA records for months. They want everything, though the Judge has only approved the State to send them some of the material. We don’t have any specifics on which material they’ll get or what it will tell Kohberger’s lawyers.

At this point, there is no trial date set for Kohberger, after his initial trial date of Oct. 2023 was canceled. Prosecutors recently requested a trial date in the summer, but nothing has been agreed upon yet.

Judge Judge set the next pretrial hearing for Jan. 26 in his Latah County courtroom to discuss an updated schedule.
