OLYMPIA, Wash. – Unemployment rose in early 2024 according to a recent government report, which states that job growth across Washington is experiencing malaise.

The unemployment rate rose 0.4 percent from December to January according to the Washington State Employment Security Department (ESD).

Unemployment claims were paid to 77,692 Washingtonians in January, which was about 9,500 more than December.

While health services and education jobs have increased, the hospitality industry experienced a loss of over 4,000 jobs during the first month of 2024.

The fully monthly employment report is available on ESD’s website and includes a comparison of Washington’s labor and employment trends with national trends.
