SPOKANE, Wash. — All flags at City facilities will be lowered to half-staff today in remembrance of Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.

O’Connor, retired Associate of the Supreme Court of the United States, died at the age of 93 on Dec. 1.

She was the first woman to serve on the nation’s highest court. O’Connor, whom commentators had once called the nation’s most powerful woman, remained the court’s only woman until 1993, until President Bill Clinton nominated Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

“I didn’t do all the things the boys did,” she said in a 1981 Time magazine interview, “but I fixed windmills and repaired fences.”

President Biden has directed that all state and U.S. flags at all state agency facilities be lowered to remember Justice O’Connor.

“Justice Sandra Day O’Connor was an American icon, the first woman on the Supreme Court,” said Mayor Woodward. “We encourage anyone with a flag outside of their home or business to join us in honoring Justice O’Connor.”

Flags will remain at half-staff until unset on the day of interment.
