Idaho government warns public of misleading election mailers

BOISE, Idaho – Idaho Secretary of State Phil McGrane warned the public of potentially misleading election mailers on Monday.

McGrane’s office highlighted political mailers, as well as texts and phone calls to constituents, that can confuse voters into thinking that they are receiving official election information.

“We all receive numerous mailings, texts, and automated calls. Unfortunately, a portion of these can be misleading. For important details, like election times, polling place locations, registration information and other official election information, I encourage all Idaho voters to turn to your local election officials,” McGrane said.

The Secretary of State’s office has launched a new website to keep voters apprised of updated official election information.

McGrane advised voters to defer to election information which comes from government websites (which are delineated with a .gov domain) and mail with the official US Postal Service election mail logo.

Election misinformation has been a persistent problem in the last several election cycles, and the introduction of AI technology poses new risks to the democratic process. As citizens consider their voting choices this November, elections officials are navigating a complicated digital and political landscape.
