REPUBLIC, Wash.- The Ferry County Sheriff’s Office has warned the public that mail is being stolen and damaged across the county.

In a statement on social media, the office stated that unlocked mailboxes have been targeted by someone or a group of people. Packages have been stolen, or mail has simply been dumped from the box onto the street, on multiple occasions, including multiple times at the same residences.

The sheriff’s office asked any member of the public who sees a car tailing a postal carrier to notify them at (509) 775-3132.

Mail theft is a persistent national problem due to the prevalence of unlocked and unmonitored mailboxes. Stealing mail is a felony in Washington State which can result in up to a five year prison sentence.
