OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington State Department of Health (DOH) announced that some commercial shellfish areas could have restricted harvest numbers this year due to high levels of fecal bacteria.
The areas which could be restricted by the DOH are in Mason and Clallam counties.
Shellfish Growing Area official Scott Berbells encouraged the public to do its part in reducing fecal matter levels in water.
“People can do their part by maintaining their septic systems, picking up pet waste, using pump out stations for boats and recreational vehicles, and managing animal waste from farms,” Barbells said.
Washington’s shellfish exports amounted to $131 million in 2018 according to the Washington State Department of Agriculture.
The DOH announcement did not include details on the potential economic impact of restricting harvest numbers in two counties.
