SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. — A man was arrested after he allegedly drove a forklift into glass doors at a Spokane Valley store.

Matthew D. Fischer, 54, is accused of stealing a forklift at a store near the 16200 block of E. Broadway Avenue around 7:50 p.m.

According to the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), Fischer elevated the fork and drove into a set of doors, breaking the glass and disabling them. SCSO said Fischer backed up and appeared to be passed out behind the wheel.

Employees woke him and removed him from the vehicle while they waited for deputies to arrive.

When deputies spoke with Fischer, they said he was slurring his words, had the odor of alcohol and appeared to be intoxicated. He told police he remembered being at his apartment/hotel room before going out to get food but didn’t know where he was or how he got to the store.

Fischer was transported and booked into the Spokane County Jail for first-degree malicious mischief. According to SCSO, the estimated cost of damage to the store is $5,000 – $7,000.
