SPOKANE, Wash. – A spring break outing at Minnehaha Park turned violent when a father was attacked by a group while his four children watched.
Eugene Sievert was spending the day at the park with his kids when a confrontation escalated into a brutal beating captured on cell phone video.
The incident began when Sievert’s son alerted him about a commotion involving his daughter.
“My middle son had run down the hill to let me know that there was something going on, a commotion and that my daughter was involved,” Sievert said.
Sievert said he ran across the park to find a large group of young men near his daughter, he tried to defuse the situation.
“I had asked those boys to just go their way, and we would go our way and that’s when I heard a couple of replies from the one, and I won’t repeat what he said but he came back over and they circled me,” Sievert explained.
The cell phone video shows Sievert being kicked and beaten repeatedly by multiple guys while his children’s voices can be heard in the background.
Sievert suffered a broken nose and was treated on scene by the fire department. By the time police arrived, the attackers had run away.
Two weeks later, no arrests have been made. Police believe the group members are between 14 and 20 years old. Investigators confirm they have checked with local school districts, but no suspects have been identified.
Sievert expressed frustration with the investigation and fears the group will attack others.
“I’m afraid that he’s going to do this to someone else if he doesn’t get taken care of,” he said.
The father is calling for a more thorough investigation.
“I would just like law enforcement to be a little more thorough. You know, when you’ve got a group of kids at a park and there’s an attack happening, you know, let’s say it was somebody maybe not as great health as I was. Let’s say it was an older person that tried to go up and do the exact same thing I did,” Sievert said.
The video of the assault has been shared hundreds of times on social media. Police have declined to provide additional details about the case, citing the need to protect the integrity of the investigation.
