Spokane bars plan World Cup watch parties

SPOKANE, Wash. — Local bars and restaurants are planning World Cup watch parties as the tournament starts in nine days.

Egypt’s national team will host a training session at Gonzaga’s Luger Field on June 10th. Limited tickets are available.

Businesses across Spokane will host parties when the first game begins June 11th.

No-Li Brew House will host World Cup events. Owner John Bryant said the parties bring people together.

“I think it’s about getting people excited. It’s a tough economy and a tough society right now. We need something good to celebrate,” Bryant said.

Iron Goat Brewing will also host watch parties. Tap room manager Peter Bachon said the brewery wants to be part of the festivities.

“We are huge soccer fans here, and we are just really excited that Spokane is doing a lot around the World Cup this time around, hosting team Egypt. There are going to be games in Seattle. It’s huge that Washington state is as involved as it is, so we want to be as involved as we can too,” Bachon said.

Both businesses see the World Cup as unifying.

“I think of the World Cup and I think of how fractured the world is in some ways, and it’s one of those sporting events that brings together every country. It just seems like a sporting event that’s very much needed right now,” Bachon said.

Bryant welcomes all fans.

“I don’t care what country you’re from or what city and state you are from. You come here and you celebrate. We have Egypt next door, the American team playing who we are all rooting for. It’s time to wake up, and Spokane will wake up to this opportunity,” Bryant said.

The U.S. plays their first World Cup game Friday, June 12th.
