OLYMPIA, Wash. – Republican candidate for Washington governor and former US Congressman Dave Reichert responded to a recent criticism from Attorney General Bob Ferguson (D) on Saturday.

Ferguson, a fellow gubernatorial candidate, cast aspersions on Reichert via social media on Thursday for accepting the endorsement of Spokane County Sheriff John Nowels.

The sheriff was reprimanded while serving as an undersheriff in 2019 for making a joke about killing ex-wives.

Reichert responded with a statement to NonStop Local on Saturday which condemned Nowels’ 2019 statements while highlighting his own tenure as King County Sheriff.

“I grew up in a home with domestic violence, spent my whole career fighting domestic violence and responded to many domestic violence calls in my 33-year law enforcement career. Sheriff Nowels’ comments were wrong and should never be tolerated,” Reichert said.

Reichert went on to criticize Ferguson’s post focused on Nowels’ endorsement.

“These attacks by Attorney General Ferguson are just desperate distractions. The voters of Washington demand better,” Reichert said.

Nowels’ endorsement remains on Reichert’s campaign website as of Saturday night along with a list of 30 other county sheriffs who are supporting the Republican candidate.
