COEUR d’ALENE, Idaho – Crime is down 20% over the past two years in downtown Coeur d’Alene, according to the Coeur d’Alene Police Department (CDA PD).

The PD says a newly developed police task force is the reason behind it.

In the summer of 2021, CDA PD received 909 calls for service in downtown Coeur d’Alene. In the summer of 2022, CDA PD received 889 calls for service in downtown Coeur d’Alene. In the summer of 2023, CDA PD received 710 calls for service in downtown Coeur d’Alene.

It’s a group of five officers, specifically assigned to the downtown core.

“A lot of things to enjoy downtown so we want to make it very enjoyable and a place of attraction. We want the businesses to be successful and the people to come down here and enjoy themselves,” Scholten said.

Shelby Boholl works at Mountain Madness Soap Company in downtown. She says she’s noticed a difference.

“It can be scary sometimes, especially when it’s late at night and it’s dark. But knowing that I have a phone number for them and that they are around every street corner makes me feel a bit safer walking back to my car at night,” Bohall said.

The task force is seasonal. It’s wrapping up work in downtown this week and should be back next spring.
