CityGuide Companion: Reasons You Need to Try Rolled Ice Cream at Freezia

0

Located just down the street from the White House Grill (close enough to catch a strong whiff of garlic on a breezy day) Freezia Ice Cream, is still relatively new to the area. Their grand opening was on July 2nd, 2016 and they almost immediately had lines of customers out the door. But it wasn’t just because it was summer and everyone loves a sweet frozen treat in the summer. Freezia also offers a unique experience and a new way to enjoy a classic favorite. Taking a cue from a rising trend in East Asia, Freezia uses iced grills to freeze, mix, and roll ice cream into a new kind of eating experience. And if that isn’t enough to urge you to head to Freezia yourself to try it, maybe these five reasons will get you out there.

It’s so pretty.

Rolled is one of the most interesting and aesthetically pleasing ways to serve this frozen treat. It includes creamy rolls of chocolate, vanilla, or whatever base you choose, slightly texturized by fruit, cookies, candy, nuts, or even cheese cake mixed in. Then it’s topped with an elegant swirl of sauce and a healthy mountain of whipped cream, as well as sprinkles or nuts or candy pieces. Rolled ice cream is almost too pretty to eat.

It’s so tasty.

You won’t find any prepackaged ice cream mixes here. All of the ice cream used at Freezia is handmade from the owner’s own recipes. What started as a hobby in his home that was shared amongst family and friends has become the base of one of the most unique dessert options in the area. And unlike many rolled ice cream shops, all of the fruits and mix-ins used are as fresh as possible as well.

It’s so affordable.

There is usually one price for ice cream at Freezia – $6.50. So less than seven bucks gets you whatever ice cream flavor and whatever mix-ins and toppings you want from the extensive menu of options. It  can also get you the pre-designed options, such as Cheesecake or S’mores. Once in awhile there will be a special item available that costs slightly more, such as Red Velvet Cupcake at Valentine’s Day. But even then it’s still less than $10 for a treat big enough to feed at least two people (if you are inclined to share).

It’s so local.

Rolled (or stir-fried) ice cream may not have been invented here, but Freezia is the first business to bring it to the area. And not as part of a chain of national or international ice cream shops. Freezia is locally owned and operated, and many of the ingredients used in the recipes are locally grown and sourced.

It’s so interesting.

Just watching rolled ice cream be made is fascinating. It takes some science, some skill, and some artistry to get it right. But the ice cream isn’t the only interesting thing to be found here. The shop itself, decorated with giant polar bear posters and bean bag seating areas and photos of local MMA fighters, is casually welcoming and attention-grabbing. And the man behind the counter, Shawn Carr, is a fountain of crazy, funny, surprising, and fascinating stories. If you stroll in before the crowds hit, he might even have a minute or ten to tell you one while he dishes up your sweet treat.

Freezia is located in Post Falls at 112 E Seltice Way, Suite B. They’re open Monday through Sunday, from 11am until 10pm most days (though only until 9pm on Sundays). Check them out on Facebook or head in today to see why rolled ice cream is the next big thing in dessert.
