Butch the Cougar sculptures make their way across Washington

PULLMAN, Wash.- Washington State University Vancouver has installed a new cougar statue to match WSU Pullman’s iconic Butch sculpture. A similar reproduction was installed on WSU Spokane’s campus on Feb. 12.

Versions of the beloved cougar can now be found on WSU satellite campuses around the Evergreen State.

A statement from the university expressed excitement for student reactions to Butch’s new sculpture on the Vancouver campus.

“Students are not on campus today because of the President’s Day holiday. They will be surprised tomorrow morning!” WSU Vancouver said.

The sculpture and pedestal were paid for through philanthropic donations to the WSU Foundation and did not use tax-payer funds. The statue marks the second to last satellite campus to install a Butch reproduction.

“Gary Scheidmiller, a [WSU] alumnus, made a commitment to donate a statue similar to the one in front of Martin Stadium at WSU Pullman to each of WSU’s physical campuses,” WSU Vancouver said.

While his original home may be in Pullman, Butch the Cougar has clearly become a popular cat across Washington State.
