DEER PARK, Wash. – The owner and barista of Coffee Coma in Deer Park has returned to work after recovering from two surgeries related to breast cancer.

Amanda Sheppard, the sole operator of the coffee shop, had to stop working after she was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer in 2023.

Community members rallied around Sheppard while she received care, and held a fundraiser to support the local business owner.

“It’s been amazing, everyone helped me out so much. All the people in this town that donated an amazing amount of money. My landlords for my business, I didn’t even have to pay rent the whole 8 months I was gone, which was super amazing…People in this town are awesome,” Sheppard said.

The resumed operations of Coffee Coma marked a triumphant return for Deer Park, and an emotional moment for the business owner.

“A lot of people came in here crying and were like, ‘I didn’t think you were ever gonna come back.’ So, it was a very emotional and awesome first three days back for sure. Lots of tears. Lots of people happy. And it’s amazing,” Sheppard said.
