As winter weather approaches, make sure you know how to claim insurance after disasters

SPOKANE, Wash. — As we head into our winter season there is a possibility of winter disasters. And with that, residents need to know what to do if their insurance is giving them trouble.

Back in Aug. 2022, there was a massive hailstorm that left damage to roofs across the area.

Logan Hickle, with the Better Business Bureau (BBB), describes how they have been able to help residents dealing with roof damage from that storm.

A 90-year-old lady who was affected by the storm had not gotten her roof replaced. Her son called the BBB in May of this year to ask how they can get help from their insurance. Allstate claimed that the damage to the roof was due to golf balls from a nearby course, not the storm.

Once the BBB stepped in and got in contact with their insurance, they agreed to pay the full $30,000 to get her roof replaced.

Now, this woman is not the only victim to insurance companies. This is common, so Hickle recommends to:

Stay calmWhile these situations are stressful at times, it is best to stay calm and talk about a resolution with your insurance provider.Keep a record of all communicationThis is very important especially once you are assigned a new adjuster or case manager. You can give them useful information on the case and show you are engaged in the process. This will also help facilitate discussions to get the job done.

Keep these two things in mind if you ever need to deal with insurance companies!
