SPOKANE, Wash. — With snow possibly approaching the area this week, Spokane schools may have different schedules depending on what mother nature brings.

The National Weather Service – Spokane has released that there has been a big change in weather for this week. Which includes possible snowfall and a big drop in temperatures.

If you have a child that goes to a Spokane Public School, be prepared for school changes depending on the severity of the weather.

Here are some reminders about school closures:

Staff and families will be notified of a closure or late-start through the district’s notification system. You can expect an email, text and call between 5:30 a.m. – 6 a.m.If you don’t see a notification for a closure or late-start by 6 a.m., you can assume school is scheduled as usual that day.SPS carefully considers if a school closure or delay is necessary due to weather. School is the safest place for many students to stay warm, be supervised and receive two meals.Parents are also encouraged to consider conditions of their neighborhood when deciding whether to keep their student home. If you decide to keep your child home, call the school office to request an excused absence. When snow increases, the maintenance and operations staff will be responsible for keeping the sidewalks, crossing areas and park lots within the school property clear.By City of Spokane ordinance, citizens and businesses must keep their sidewalks shoveled. Make sure to clear a 36-inch path for students to travel safely.

Once temperatures get colder, please send your students to school with weather appropriate clothing.

If you miss a notification for school closures on your phone, they will also be posted on SPS social media pages. For more information regarding closures and late-starts, visit the Spokane Schools website.
