SPOKANE, Wash. – Police identified and arrested two people in an armed burglary that turned into a chase in the early morning hours in Spokane.
On Jan. 9, Spokane Police received multiple calls that there was a break in at an apartment with two suspects who were possibly armed and were wearing masks.
Upon approach, the suspects fled from the apartment in a vehicle.
A Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputy was able to locate and follow the vehicle from a distance a short time after the suspects had fled.
The deputy waited for other officers to arrive before attempting to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle. Upon attempting to stop, the vehicle began to flee, and police initiated a pursuit with the vehicle.
During the pursuit, officers successfully deployed a spike strip to help disable the vehicle, but due to the unsafe nature of the pursuit with a disabled vehicle, the pursuit was called off.
Later that morning, the vehicle was found unoccupied, and police built a perimeter and attempted to track the suspects.
Spokane Police then received a call that a car had been stolen after leaving it running outside a resident’s house. It was determined by police that it was the two suspects that had stolen the vehicle.
After police had located the stolen vehicle and had again attempted to conduct a traffic stop, the suspects fled. This pursuit ended near the Liberty Park Library.
Suspects abandoned the vehicle and continued to flee on foot.
Police and K9 units were able to track and locate the suspects on foot and took them into custody on counts of burglary in the first degree, and theft of a motor vehicle.
The suspects have been identified as 31-year-old Shane Johnson and 18-year-old Makenzie McFarling.
Johnson is an 8-time convicted felon.
McFarling is also charged with attempting to elude police.
