3 Spokane County deputies who shot and killed a child rape suspect named

SPOKANE, Wash. – The names of the deputies involved in the shooting and killing of a child rape suspect at Deer Park have been released by Spokane County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputy Josiah Loos has served with the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office since 2019. Detective Samuel Turner has served the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office since 2015. Detective Travis West has served in the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office since 2015.

The child rape suspect who was shot and killed by deputies in Deer Park was identified as Donald Hegel, 43, failed to appear in court on March 27 to face charges of first-degree rape of a child.

On March 29, Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies arrived at the 30300 block of North Monroe Road to serve an arrest warrant.

After multiple hours and many attempts to get Hegel to surrender, including the use of chemical irritants, SWAT breached the front and back doors but could not locate the suspect. Deputies then broke through a window, and shots were fired.

Hegel was immediately provided aid but died on the scene.

The SIIR Team is conducting an investigation.
