SPOKANE COUNTY, Wash. — One person has died and four others are hospitalized following a head-on collision at Bigelow Gulch Road Wednesday morning.

On Jan. 24 around 5:30 a.m., Spokane County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a head-on collision between a Semi-truck and a Sedan.

Spokane County Fire District 9 firefighters were called to the scene to provide medical attention and help deputies close the roadway to traffic.

According to a press release from the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office, initial information indicates that a semi-truck, with two people, was traveling west on Bigelow Gulch Road when it crossed over the centerline and collided with an Acura, occupied by three adults.

All three adults in the Acura were transported to Sacred Heart with serious, possibly life-threatening injuries and were listed in critical condition. Despite medical personnel’s efforts, one of the adults succumbed to their injuries and was pronounced dead.

The other two occupants of the semi were transported to the hospital with minor injuries to receive treatment and evaluation.

Traffic Unit Investigators at the scene believe that speed and conditions could be a factor in this crash. Deputies on scene stated that when they arrived, there was dense fog and icy road conditions in the area.

The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the cause and manner of death at a later date.

Bigelow Gulch at Weile is still closed in both directions while an investigation is conducted. The roadway is expected to be closed to traffic for several hours as the investigation continues and the vehicles are removed.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available. Check back for updates.
