YWCA Spokane encourages public to take action during Domestic Violence Awareness month

SPOKANE, Wash. — YWCA Spokane asks the community to raise awareness about domestic violence and encourage proactive steps to address this critical issue.

October is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. YWCA Spokane is hoping to bring awareness to the public by encouraging organizations and individuals to take action with them.

“Spokane County has the highest reported rates of domestic violence in Washington,” states Jeanette Hauck, CEO of YWCA Spokane. “This October, let’s unite in solidarity with survivors of domestic violence, amplifying their voices and advocating for their rights. We encourage organizations and individuals to join us in taking meaningful action to create a safe and inclusive environment for all.”

During Domestic Violence Awareness Month, YWCA is striving to:

Increase Awareness: Purple is the designated color for domestic violence awareness. YWCA is urging people to wear purple, shine purple lights at your home or business and display DVAM materials.Download YWCA Spokane’s free, online action kit which includes materials and resources you can print or share online.

Inspire Action: Be a part of breaking the cycle of violence and help create a safer community for all.Breaking the Cycle: A Better Man | October 5 | 6pm – 8pm | Magic Lantern Theatre.This thought-provoking film dives into the complexities of domestic violence, challenging societal norms, and shedding light on the importance of accountability and healing. After the screening, YWCA will lead a debrief.Pathways Forward: Digital Abuse & DV | October 18 | 12pm – 1pm | Via Zoom.Free, virtual conversation with community experts on how digital abuse impacts survivors of domestic violence.
