“You’re starting the tour”: Spokane home chosen 30 days before All-American Rejects show

SPOKANE, Wash. — Alt-rock band The All-American Rejects played a secret house concert Friday night in Browne’s Addition, drawing both an exclusive in-person crowd and a large group of fans gathered outside as part of their House Party Tour.

Homeowner Levi Steverding said he and his wife purchased the property in 2017 and spent nearly a decade transforming it into an event-ready venue.

“It was a bit of a dump,” Steverding said. “But we knew the location was awesome and we knew the potential of what it could be. We’re going to buy it and spend years working on it.”

Steverding, who owns Black Canon Events production company, said he submitted the venue last year after learning the band was experimenting with house shows.

“I submitted my venue because we’ve done weddings and concerts and we do events here all year long,” he said. “We can handle this kind of capacity.”

After initially hearing nothing, Steverding said the band’s team followed up to confirm production details — including power, green rooms and tour bus parking — before selecting the home. He learned about 30 days before the show that his property would kick off part of the tour.

“Was I nervous? Yeah, a little bit. Who wouldn’t be? But I knew we could handle it,” he said.

Keeping the concert secret proved challenging. Only a small group of stagehands and ticketing staff were informed in advance.

“They said, ‘You tell absolutely no one,’” Steverding said. “That was hard to do.”

Levi’s wife, Bethany Steverding, said attendance inside the venue was capped at 500 people, but interest far exceeded expectations.

“Thank you for coming. Thank you for supporting music. Thank you for supporting Spokane,” she said. “Spokane is like the best city ever. The community is amazing. And thank you to our neighbors for embracing it and being so excited about it.”

Bethany said about 1,000 additional people gathered outside the property to listen after the venue reached capacity.

The All-American Rejects, known for hits including “Swing, Swing,” “Move Along,” “It Ends Tonight” and “Gives You Hell,” have sold more than 10 million albums worldwide. The band has been hosting surprise house concerts across the country, with locations revealed only to fans who RSVP through their website.

During the performance, lead singer Tyson Ritter brought a proposal to center stage. Ritter called for a man named Seth, who then called his girlfriend Jess forward from the crowd. Within moments, Seth got down on one knee and proposed as Ritter also knelt in support. Jess said yes.

After the proposal, Ritter dedicated the band’s song “Sweat” to the newly engaged couple as the crowd cheered.
