SPOKANE, Wash. – If you are looking for a way to get your foot in the door of the public education industry, Spokane Public Schools might have the perfect opportunity for you.

On Thursday, Oct. 19, SPS is hosting their annual paraeducator hiring event!

Paraeducators are vital assistants both in and out of the classroom and can provide support to students and staff in a number of ways. Some paraeducators may work one-on-one with students, assist with classroom management, provide instructional support, or even act as a translator.

Some paraeducators also support students in special education settings, working closely with students who need academic, medical, social or emotional support, or who have cognitive delays.

According to the SPS director of special education, Kristina Baker, they are looking for flexible people who are ready to work with a wide variety of students. They want people who love kids, have patience, and are willing to work with, navigate and support different students. They want people who are able and willing to collaborate and be apart of a team.

If any of these roles appeals to you, head to the Newtech Skills Center off of Market and Garland between 4-7 p.m. with your resume. This event serves as an opportunity to meet the teams you could be working with in-person, and to show them your personality.

There are about 50 jobs available across the 57 SPS school buildings. Some of the positions are one-on-one and some will help a small class of 10-12 students.

Staff on-site will be working to find the best fits for both the schools and the candidates, including trying to find locations close to home if travel is a concern.

The main qualifications for the job? SPS said it boils down to a love of education and a commitment to providing all students with a dream, access, and opportunity.
