Washington State University emphasizes service learning with new program

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University (WSU) has created a new service learning component for two courses which allows students to serve their local community.

Psychology and human development students, through a partnership with the WSU Center for Civic Engagement and the Provost’s Office, can now engage in service learning around Pullman.

Opportunities include assisting at Bishop Place Senior Living and working with Pullman Parks and Recreation.

Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies Samantha Swindell hopes that the service learning helps students identify their own values and goals.

“Our goal was to give students the space and opportunity to think about who they are, where they want to go, and what learning experiences could help them in that developmental process,” Swindell said.

WSU says that the service learning component has boosted retention and helped foster diversity in the classroom.

More information on the partnership can be found on WSU’s website.
