OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Commissioner of Public Lands, Hilary Franz, has announced that $8 million in state funding will be dedicated to tree planting.

The commissioner argued that after devastating wildfires and worsening air quality trees are no longer nice-to-have they are a must-have.

The Department of Natural Resources received 122 grant applications for expanding and improving urban forestry with many of the applications coming from poor environmental health and low tree equity areas.

The 122 applications requesting more than $23.5 million in development but resulting in only 40 of those applicants receiving funds.

The full list of applicants has been invited to join the first ever Washington Tree Equity Collaborative aiming to create tree equity in every neighborhood in Washington.
