Washington governor signs executive order supporting women experiencing menopause in workplace

SEATTLE — Governor Bob Ferguson signed an executive order Monday supporting women in the workplace who are experiencing menopause, directing state agencies to implement accommodations and create resources for employers across Washington.

Executive Order 26-01 instructs the Washington State Women’s Commission to work with cabinet agencies to develop appropriate workplace accommodations for people experiencing menopause and perimenopause. The commission will also create guidance and training materials for state agencies and other public and private employers.

In Washington, 38% of working women are between ages 40 and 59 and may experience symptoms including insomnia, brain fog and hot flashes that can disrupt work performance and career advancement.

The Mayo Clinic estimates productivity losses due to menopausal symptoms total approximately $1.8 billion nationwide. Research shows two in five women have considered leaving or have left their jobs due to menopausal symptoms.

“We are losing women in the workforce with tremendous knowledge and experience because we are not doing enough to prepare for a natural stage of life,” Ferguson said.

The order directs the Women’s Commission to review existing policies and recommend practical measures such as telework options, flexible dress codes and access to cold water and temperature control.

“Menopause has been invisible in workplace policy for too long,” said Washington State Women’s Commission Executive Director Brittany Gregory. “These are not burdensome changes; they are smart workforce policy that ensure experienced workers can stay, grow and lead.”

According to a national AARP survey, 90% of women age 35 and older experience menopausal symptoms, some of which can interfere with daily activities. Studies indicate that Black, Asian and Latina women tend to enter menopause earlier than white women.
