PULLMAN, Wash – Families of the University of Idaho students murdered by Bryan Kohberger will have to wait until fall of 2027 for a judge to hear their case against Washington State University.
The families of Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, Ethan Chapin and Xana Kernodle are suing WSU, where Kohberger was a student at the time of the murders.
The families say WSU should have done more to act on complaints about Kohberger’s behavior.
Kohberger was a graduate student studying criminology.
The lawsuit says WSU received at least 13 formal complaints of discriminatory, harassing or stalking-type behavior.
WSU did terminate Kohberger’s teaching assignment, but the families allege that didn’t happen until after them murders.
Kohberger pleaded guilty to the crimes and is serving life in prison in Idaho. It was never established why he chose to target four students to whom he had no known previous connection.
The families are suing for negligence and wrongful death.
In a status conference Monday, the court set a schedule for the proceedings, setting the trial date for September 13, 2027.
The court expects the trial to last 20 days.
In court last week, both sides agreed they do not expect this case to be settled before trial and do not plan to engage in any alternate dispute resolution.
