Valleyfest brings community together

SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash – Peggy Doering, the Executive Director of Valleyfest, has been involved in the festival for decades and says the festival’s mission is to build bridges.

“We are a community festival. So a community festival means we can walk and talk, sit and listen to music, and grab something to eat. Talk to people that we might not have an opportunity to interact with,” says Doering.

Doering says that in the 30 years she has been involved, this year stands alone.

“This year is special to the city of Spokane Valley Because 20 years ago, we officially became a city with 70,000 new residents. And so we’re celebrating the 20th anniversary this year,” said Doering.

Doering says this year they expect around 30,000 people to come through the grounds and enjoy the 250 vendors featured over the weekend, performances, culture fest, and everything else the weekend offers.

Long-time attendee Mary Lou Peck says the community aspect has her coming back year after year, “Everybody getting together and just enjoying themselves, feeling that connectedness.”

Doering says that Valleyfest isn’t just for today’s residents of Spokane Valley; she’s thinking towards the future, “You now get to know your neighbors and create those bonds, and you can do business with them and that we can get to know each other better to form a stronger city, a stronger community for our children and future generations.”
