UPDATE: Suspect arrested for shooting and killing a man near Stateline Speedway

POST FALLS, ID — The Kootenai County Sheriff’s office has arrested Edsel Robert Johnson for allegedly shooting and killing a man near the Stateline Speedway on the evening of Saturday May 9th.

Johnson is currently booked in the Kootenai County Jail for second degree murder.

Investigators say the alleged shooter called into dispatch around 7 p.m. on Saturday to let them know he shot someone. He claimed the man he shot was hitting his van, and he didn’t want to shoot him but had “stuff to do” according to court documents.

Deputies say Johnson was detained and later talked about “how he messed up and how this shouldn’t have happened.”

The victim has been identified as Bradley Rex.

Several witnesses told deputies they saw a van traveling northbound in the southbound lanes of Beck road at a high rate of speed, and as it approached Rex he refused to move out of the road. The witness statements continue, saying while the van drove past Rex, he swung his chair and hit the van’s passenger side. The van stopped and Rex approached the driver side window, and that’s when Johnson allegedly shot Rex and drove off.

Court documents show Rex’s wife told deputies her husband was trying to protect other bystanders from the van that was driving the wrong way.

In an interview with detectives, the documents state Johnson admitted to shooting Rex. Johnson said he was transient and a Door Dash driver and was in the process of delivering baby formula when this happened. He said when the victim came up and grabbed his door he reacted poorly. According to investigators, Johnson told them he was inpatient and didn’t mean to kill the man.
